To The Class of 2020…

To the Class of 2020,

“Even though there may not be pomp because of our circumstances, never has a graduating class been called to step into the future with more purpose, vision, passion, and energy and hope.” -Oprah Winfrey to the Class of 2020

As a 2020 graduate myself, I know this is not the ending we were expecting. Although graduations have been postponed and celebrations moved, we should be proud of everything we have accomplished. All of the hard work has finally paid off! Whether you are moving onto college, continuing your education or entering the workforce, the Class of 2020 has done and will continue to do, amazing things. After all, the world has changed and we have the power to positively influence what happens next.

While we wait for our time to celebrate, this situation provides a unique opportunity for reflection. Looking back to the beginning of the year, no one knew this is where we would be now. Many feel a lack of closure due to the abrupt and uncertain end to our year, but through this, strength and determination shine through. Despite the challenges and setbacks faced, the Class of 2020 persevered and finished its final semester. This resiliency is truly inspiring. Even though it may not seem like it at the moment, I believe this class will emerge stronger and more prepared to enter this “new normal”.

In this situation, it is essential to remain optimistic and focus on the positives. Moving day-by-day, life will resume and career paths will be back on track. Unlike classes before us, who moved directly into the world, we have been able to move into suspended animation rather gracefully. This gives us the chance to develop and enhance skills that will help society as we find a new way forward. Technology has been a saving grace during this time and our advanced virtual skills will set us ahead when we are finally able to enter the professional world.

It is also important to remember to give back to our communities and those around us during this time. This is our generation’s moment to lend a helping hand and impact the lives of others. It is time for us to become the heroes we have looked up to growing up. We are the future and I am excited for us to make our mark on the world.

It is safe to say these unexpected times have tested us as individuals, but we have pushed through and will continue to do so.

Once again, congratulations Class of 2020 – here’s to the future!
