MCFA is seeking a highly-motivated individual to join our team as a Director of Sustainability to support our client in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Director of Sustainability may perform duties to include but not limited to developing renewable energy projects, conduct energy audits, develop and implement energy savings projects, coordinate with client regarding potential Utility Energy Savings Contracts, and/or Energy Savings Performance Contracts projects, or other alternative financing vehicles, assist with development and implementation of the Energy Implementation Plan and provide innovative approaches for specific projects. The successful candidate will be a Senior-level Architect, Engineer, or Senior-level Planner or proven sustainability professional with the skills, knowledge, and expertise necessary to accomplish the work. They must be an experienced professional. Must be very detailed oriented, well organized and must write clearly and concisely. .
The Energy Engineer may perform duties to include but not limited to developing renewable energy projects, conduct energy audits, develop and implement energy savings projects, coordinate with client regarding potential Utility Energy Savings Contracts, and/or Energy Savings Performance Contracts projects, or other alternative financing vehicles, assist with development and implementation of the Energy Implementation Plan and provide innovative approaches for specific projects.
The purpose of this position is to provide MCFA’s client with in-house sustainability leadership overseeing programs, design and operational support for the portfolio of owned and third party properties and future projects under design and development. The primary responsibilities of the position will be to ensure the client’s real property projects fully meet the client’s sustainable design standards and achieve energy performance savings established for each project, as well as train staff and residents to help achieve the client’s Sustainability Plan. This task includes validating and assembling the documentation for each project’s conformity to sustainability and energy use reduction requirements and goals (using ASHRAE or LEED standards) and work with outside professionals to achieve such goals. Where deficiencies occur, the Sustainability Director shall document the concerns and potential unsatisfactory performance areas at each specific property of concerns. The Sustainability Director will work with internal and external professionals to develop and implement an appropriate Sustainability Plan.
The Sustainability Director shall have the skills, knowledge and expertise necessary to accomplish the work required by this position. The individual must be LEED Accredited Professional either Legacy LEED AP (LEED AP), Building Design + Construction (LEED BD+C) or Operations and Maintenance (LEED O+M) valid certifications.
Specific job duties include:
Sustainability Plan: Work with management and outside professionals to develop and implement a Sustainability Plan approved by the executives of the company, setting goals for energy curtailment, sustainable design and management, staff and resident engagement to make the client one the most sustainable collegiate housing REITs in the nation.
Project Planning, Development and Design Phase: Assist project development team in creating and implementing sustainability requirements and metrics for new projects during the project planning, design and construction phase. Participate in early construction project planning. Attend planning and design meetings during project development phase. This individual will focus on any sustainability or energy conservation measures that would help the project and company save energy costs, reduce O&M costs, or enhances project quality and experience for end users.
Construction Design Review: Review construction project contract specifications and design packages prior to solicitation. Document any deficiencies (errors, omissions, generalities) that would hinder verification of the details of sustainability and energy use reduction requirements for each project. Identify any changes needed to meet goals and include the rationale for the changes. Publish a monthly Sustainability Tracking Report documenting what is going on with the program on a project by project basis.
OM: Support on-site Community Managers in periodic (quarterly) reviews of performance against sustainability and energy use reductions and savings goals. Make recommendations for improvements and develop plan to implement any new programs.
Reporting Requirements: This individual will be required to develop monthly and quarterly reporting for documenting program results and YOY cost savings by property/program. This individual will also be responsible for reporting statistics including climate changes by market, energy usage and trends that will assist with developing programs to support the company’s sustainability efforts.
Education and License Requirement
A four-year bachelor’s degree in energy management, engineering, architecture, planning, environmental sciences, or related field. The person must have completed professional training in energy efficiency, sustainability planning, master planning and/or sustainable design and construction.
